There are two primary ways to fish a swimbait in mid depth situations. If bass are in mid depths and holding in cover such as brush or grass, swim the lure just above the cover to pull bass up, out of the cover. If bass are feeding on open flats, allow the swim bait to hit bottom and retrieve it at a speed to remain close to the bottom.

3 Most Important Factors About Swimbaits in Mid-Depth water
  • Swim baits are a natural replica of the food sources bass feed upon.
  • Water clarity is crucial as bass use sight as their primary sense to find the lure.
  • Swim baits have a reputation for catching huge bass.
3 Most Effective Fishing Methods
  • Make long casts and fish the lure at depths just above the cover, or close to the bottom.
  • Swim leisurely in clear water, near or above cover.
  • Fish submerged structure by keeping the lure close to the cover.
Use swimbaits at mid depth in clear water.
Swim Bait

Choose a swimbait over other lures when you are fishing clear water, particularly on sunny days, to pull bass out of cover. In clear water, fish the same type areas where you would fish other reaction lures if the water were not so clear.

The attraction of a swimbait is that it appears very real to bass. Unlike a reaction bait (spinnerbaits and crankbaits), bass strike it because they are convinced it is a natural food source.

Make long casts and retrieve at a constant speed. Experiment to determine the best speed at the time you are fishing. The best swim baits have a natural swimming action. Their subtle swimming action is what fools the bass.

Swimbaits do have a reputation of attracting larger bass so be prepared with heavy enough line to handle bigger fish around the cover you are fishing.
